What's your Batman Story?

What Is Your “Batman” Story?

There is one story above all that explains why you do what you do.

One conversation, one crisis or chain of events that created a powerful “fork in the road” moment when the life or career path you were following changed dramatically and permanently.

In many respects, you could call this defining period of time in your life, your  own real-life “Batman” story.

Back in 1939, a seven-year old boy watches in horror as his parents – Thomas and Martha Wayne – are murdered in cold blood while walking the streets of Gotham. From that moment on, young Bruce Wayne swears to avenge criminal behavior and bring justice for all. It is THE defining moment that explains the enduring artistic and commercial success of The Dark Knight franchise. It is the one part of the story that never changes – the anchor that keeps the story grounded in a timeless truth – no matter how often it is told and re-told by the likes of Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Val Kilmer and Adam West, among others.

What if there is a “Batman” story already inside you waiting to be discovered and shared?

Would it help to know how others have transcended personal or professional setbacks or tragedies? Is there a way to detect clues in calamities – big and small – and find new ways to make meaningful contributions in business or life?

This week, we go one-on-one with a modern-day minstrel on a mission Dave Carroll; a musical caped crusader of customer service who is using his “Batman Story” to serve the greater good on this edition of The Reinvention Chronicles.

“People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can’t do that as Bruce Wayne, as a man I’m flesh and blood I can be ignored I can be destroyed but as a symbol, as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting”
BATMAN, “Batman Begins”

  1. In many ways the “Batman” Story can be compared to what Simon Sinek revealed with his Golden Circle and best-selling book Start With Why. Unfortunately, far too many business types have tried to identify their “why” through re-cycled mission statement language and corporate-speak. Understanding your “why” through the fictional lens of the “Batman” story will give you a sharper focus when you journey back to the real-life circumstances that engulfed and re-defined you.
  2. Going on this introspective journey demands that you recall and catalog as much detail as humanly possible to better identify and connect with the emotional truth you are attempting to own and grow from. It may take days, it may take weeks or months, but your recollections need to be as specific as the day 7-year old Bruce looked into his parents eyes as they lay mortally wounded.
  3. You also have to DO the work and NOT play the role of victim. Dave Carroll spent nearly a year fighting for what he believed was right and then took massive ACTION. He wrote the song, shot the $150 dollar YouTube video and posted it. In other words his story didn’t make it to Rolling Stone magazine  without Dave having to do a lot of hard work to make the music and eventual magic happen. Once you have identified and come to terms with your “Batman” story, there will never be any self-doubt on your part as to being clear on the reasons why you do the things you do and why you believe what you believe.

If you need additional help to Discover, Tell & Live your own story, HUGGABLE UNIVERSITY is an ideal forum for those who see life and business as a journey and not a destination. Once Jim and Dawna Gilbert pinpointed their own story back in 2006, the core was firmly established for an otherwise ordinary used car dealership to create an extraordinary level of business growth, substantial differentiation and a long-term plan to build brand equity.

CEO’s, entrepreneurs and start-ups from all over the world can now leverage these insights and become part of an online community dedicated to building their business and brand in a similar fashion. HUGGABLE UNIVERSITY features monthly video-based sessions, downloadable tools and unconventional curriculum that will help any business become a bonafide “Category of One“; to get noticed, get ahead and get results.

Some have referred to Jim Gilbert’s Wheels & Deals as the Canadian equivalent of world-famous Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle. All I know is that if Walt Disney himself was going to set up a used-car lot, he would enroll and take his cues from HUGGABLE UNIVERSITY. Besides Walt, if there is anyone who knows how leveraging the timeless lessons of story-telling can transform anything from Florida swampland to a Fredericton used-car lot and make your wildest dreams come true, it’s the man who created his own Five Acres of Fabulous, Jim Gilbert.
