Arnie lifted an entire sport on his shoulders. Then he put it on the map.
It happened first in America. Before long, the entire world was swooning over his swashbuckling swing and swaggering style. Supported by a loyal army of friends and followers that included everyone from Presidents to movie stars, captains of industry, everyday working folks and wide-eyed kids, Arnie made golf cool all over the planet.
Over his six decades in pro golf, Arnold Palmer’s legend still impacts virtually every aspect of the game.
In some ways it’s unfortunate that the word “authentic” has become yet another overused buzzword these days, but in Palmer’s case his genuine humility and generous spirit are still fondly remembered by friends and neighbours in Latrobe PA. One of those friends is an author lucky enough to have shared the same hometown as “The King” and enjoyed frequent, free-flowing jaw-boning sessions in non-palatial settings at popular local watering holes.
