How One Man Became King

The King is gone, but his impact is still being felt around the world.

This past weekend, it was Kurt Kitayama who benefited most. Kurt pocketed a $3.6 million top prize at Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida. Hardly a household name, Kitamaya’s clutch performance made for great television as the underdog David beat Goliaths like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, earning his first win on the PGA Tour. With a purse of $20 million dollars, there was plenty of consolation money to go around, but the real winner, once again, was the game of golf itself.

More than six years since he passed, the King’s legacy continues to shower the sport he loved like bright Florida sunshine.

Arguably the most successful businessman to have come from the world of sports, he was unquestionably the games’ biggest and most popular ambassador. Just behind the first tee at Bay Hill stands a 13-foor bronze statue that reminds fans and visitors of a remarkable sports icon and his profound impact - not just on golf but on American life and culture.

Few, however, can pinpoint the precise moment when the King threw caution to the wind and earned the crown that still belongs to him. Although there were plenty of opportunities, no one else dared to travel more than 5,000 miles to occupy a throne that was waiting for someone to step up and grab it.

Join us on the first tee at Bay Hill and discover How One Man Became King on this segment of Leaders & Legends.

“Thank God we have the example of Martin Luther King, Jr. People need role models. They need to see examples of people in peoples' lives, and that's why it's so important not just to commemorate his life, but to study and try to live by the principles of that life” CORETTA SCOTT KING
