Long Shadow Of Legacy
Done right, your legacy can leave an incredibly long and impactful shadow.
An enduring oak tree that provides comforting shade for multiple generations carved on hearts, not tombstones, your legacy becomes embedded into the minds of others with the stories they share about you. The urge to leave a legacy reflects our spiritual need to have a sense of meaning and purpose, but that was the furthest thing from Jimmy’s mind when he arrived alone in Canada in the spring of 1957.
More than five thousand miles from home, his entire focus was centered on becoming the best professional he could be; in a game that is both deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.
Jimmy’s chosen sport, G-O-L-F also happens to be the perfect metaphor for the game called L-I-F-E. You get bad breaks from good shots; good breaks from bad shots, but you still have to play the ball where it lies. A perfect blend of power and finesse, golf is enjoyed in nature’s outdoor arena where players and spectators experience the beauty of high performance against a backdrop of impeccable character. It’s where Jimmy has consistently exemplified the qualities of self-reliance, incredible patience, and personal integrity. On his United Kingdom passport, his full name reads James Gair Maxwell.
Jimmy is my father.
He is the reason I write about legends.
Several fairways off from his 83rd birthday, Dad’s story is about to come full circle. The boy who grew up learning the game at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland is l
leaving something behind that will never be measured by the gaudy and tacky success standards we frequently see on social media with those who flaunt their wealth, possessions, or fame.

p.s…. Life-long learning and golf go together like pencils and erasers when it comes to staying open to new ideas, the need for humility, never losing sight of fundamentals, and knowing where you came from. With next month’s M.G.A. Tour event fast approaching, Dad's story inspires some people to make some personal discoveries about this tradition-bound game, their life journey, and why legacy matters. If you want to be part of golf history, a few last-minute spots have opened up for the 4th Annual Four Generational Invitational, scheduled for July 15, 2022, in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Sanctioned by Commissioner Ken Reid of Sportsnet, the best-ball competition offers you and a partner a chance to secure your place in golf history and be part of a family legacy unlike any other in sports.
